The packages you can purchase in the shop contain resources and/or items to support a certain action. There are packages for upgrading buildings, crafting, research, recruiting or just containing items. Each package will help you gain more XP and enlarge your castle, getting closer to the king on the long run. There are a few different package sizes which will be changed everyday or for a small amount of gold.

Just as you can buy those packages, you can also buy gold. The different sizes contain different amounts of gold, but will always appear in the shop, so they do not refresh.
