You will get XP for everything you finish (e.g. tasks, researches, recruiting and so on). That XP will be added up to a certain amount. When you have reached the amount you need to level up, you will do so automatically. When clicking on your Avatar in the left upper corner you can check how much XP you currently have, and how much more you need to level up again.
