The ranks in the alliance allow the members to initiate different actions. The higher the rank the more you will be allowed to do, e.g. plan an attack or assign leadership ranks. You can get an overview of the rights by going to the "Members" screen in the Stronghold and clicking on the information in the upper right corner.
